The California Quail (Callipepla californica) is a medium-sized game bird with a distinctive comma-shaped crest of six feathers. Males have a striking black and white head, gray and brown scaled flanks with white streaks, and a chestnut-brown belly, while females are a more drab brownish-gray with less distinct markings. They are social birds, found in open woodlands, chaparral, and suburban areas, often living in groups called “coveys”. California quail eat a varied diet that primarily includes seeds, grains, berries, and leaves, supplemented with insects and other small invertebrates like spiders and snails.
