Information about the Grey Heron:
The Grey Heron is a wading bird native to much of Europe, Africa and Asia. It is one of the most widespread species of the family Ardeidae. They are highly adaptable and can live in a variety of environments, including cities as well as rural and urban areas. These birds are so comfortable with humans they will visit snack shops and restaurants asking for a handout. They are also very formidable hunters, feeding on fish, crustaceans, reptiles, amphibians, other birds and even small mammals.

Artist’s notes:
The Grey Heron illustration was completed on 1.21.2015. There are few birds I enjoy drawing more than herons. When I drew the Great Blue Heron many years ago I regretting not showing the bird in flight. When I learned of the closely related species Ardea cinerea I wanted to show the beautiful wings of the bird. The drawing is based on a photo by Nicola Destefano and was used with permission.
