Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) are large, distinctive hoofed ruminant known for their oversized ears and bounding gait. They are very common in western North America, thriving in varied habitats from mountains to deserts, browsing on shrubs and twigs. They are characterized by their excellent senses, especially smell and night vision. They are crepuscular being active at dawn/dusk. The male bucks spar during fall/winter mating (rut) and the females give birth to spotted fawns in spring/summer. They are extremely fast and can reach speeds of 45 mph when fleeing predators.
