The Arrau River Turtle is one of the largest freshwater turtles on earth. It goes by several names, such as South American river turtle, Giant South American turtle, the Charapa turtle, Tartaruga-da-amazônia, or simply Araú This semi-aquatic reptile is the largest of the side-neck turtles (Pleurodira). The turtle is found in the Amazon River and its tributaries in Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela. Adults often reach three feet long (one meter in length.) The turtle is a herbivore, feeding on aquatic plants. Like their relatives the sea turtles, Arrau turtles gather in huge numbers in order to travel to suitable nesting areas. Because of these large nesting areas, and the fact that few of the young survive to adulthood makes the turtle very vulnerable to environmental changes such as pollution and deforestation. The Asian Black Bear - also called the Moon Bear or White-Chested Bear - is a medium-sized species of bear, largely adapted for arboreal life, seen across much of the Himalayas and the northern parts of the Indian Subcontinent, Taiwan, Korea, northeastern China, the Russian far east and the Honsha and Shikoku islands of Japan. It is classed by the IUCN as a vulnerable species, mostly due to deforestation and active hunting for its body parts. The species is morphologically very similar to some prehistoric bears, and is thought by some scientists to be the ancestor of other extant bear species. Though largely herbivorous, Asian black bears can be very aggressive toward humans, and have frequently attacked people without provocation. Black bears typically inhabit deciduous forests, deserts, mixed forests and thornbrush forests. They rarely live in elevations of more than 12,000 feet (3,700 m). They usually inhabit elevations around 11,480 feet (3,500 m) in the Himalayas in the summer, and will climb down to 4,920 feet (1,500 m) in winter. They sometimes occur at sea level in Japan. The Asian Forest Scorpion is a member of the genus Heterometrus, which include about 50 species of scorpion native to the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia. In this family are some of the largest scorpions in the world. Heterometrus longimanus, like most scorpions, is a nocturnal species which spends much of it's day hidden away in a burrow, or in a tree cavity or other forest litter. It emerges at night seeking prey, which is can subdue with it's large claws and venom tipped tail. The sting of this scorpion, while painful, is not usually fatal. They are sometimes kept as pets. The Asian Giant Hornet - also called the "Murder Hornet" is the world's largest species of hornet. They can grow to 2" inches long (50 mm) with a wingspan of 3 inches (76 mm) They're generally found in low mountains and forests. They are predatory animals feeding on other insects and the honey from honeybees. The stinger of the Asian giant hornet is about .25 inches long (6 millimeters) and injects an especially potent venom that contains a cytolytic peptide that can damage tissue by stimulating phospholipase action, in addition to its own phospholipase. Masato Ono, an entomologist at Tamagawa University near Tokyo, described the sensation as feeling "like a hot nail being driven into my leg". The Asian or Oriental Small-Clawed Otter is a member of the family Mustelidae. They're native to the mangrove swamps, tidal pools and freshwater wetlands of much of Southeast Asia and southern China. Of all otter species in the world, Aonyx cinerea is the smallest of them all. Their name comes from the relatively small claws they have, which barely extend out past the pads of their paws. Like other otter species, they are highly skilled hunters and can feed upon a large variety of animals, such as crustaceans and mollusks, smaller invertebrates, amphibians and fish. They will also prey on smaller mammals and reptiles. Due to habit loss, pollutions and loss of food sources they are now considered vulnerable by some environmental organizations. The Asiatic Lion - also known as the Indian Lion or Persian Lion - is a large carnivorous mammal that once ranged across the coastal forests of northern Africa and from northern Greece across south-west Asia to eastern India. Today they are limited to one small area in the Gir Forest in India. They are slightly smaller than their African counterparts. Their main prey are wild boars, buffaloes, antelopes, and deer. While they are considered endangered, their population is stable and they are a protected species. There are currently less than 500 Asiatic lions living in the wild.
