The African Crowned Eagle - also called the Crowned Hawk-Eagle - is a large bird of prey found in sub-Saharan Africa. Its preferred habitats are principally riparian woodlands and various forests. At least 90 per cent are mammals, such as small ungulates, rock hyrax and small primates like monkeys. Due to a relatively high level of habitat adaptability, it was until recently considered to be faring well by the standards of large, forest-dependent raptors. However, today it is generally thought that it is decreasing far more than was previously perceived due to the almost epidemic destruction of native tropical African forest. It is now listed as Near Threatened. The African Fish Eagle - also called the African Sea Eagle - is a large species of eagle that found throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa, usually near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply. As a result of its large range, it is known in many languages. This bird of prey has a wingspan of nearly 8 feet (2.4 meters.) As the name makes clear, it feeds primarily on fish which it will catch by swooping down on the water's surface a grabbing the fish with it's formidable talons. It will also prey on other birds, turtles, lizards and even newly born crocodiles. It is the national bird of Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Sudan. There is an estimated wild population of about 300,000 birds. The American Bald Eagle is large bird of prey native to much of the North American continent. The plumage of an adult bald eagle is brown with a white head and tail. Male bald eagles generally measure 3 feet from head to tail, weigh 7 to 10 pounds, and have a wingspan of about 6 1/2 feet. Bald eagles are believed to live 30 years or longer in the wild. They mate for life and build huge nests in the tops of large trees near rivers, lakes, marshes, or other wetland areas. In the US it is illegal to own the feather of these raptors. During the late 20th century the Bald Eagle was almost eliminated from the lower 48 states in the US, but thanks to conservation efforts the animal has now re-established itself and has been removed from the endangered species list.
