Information about Dinosaurs:

Dinosaurs were a large, diverse group of extinct animals that dominated the earth for about 160 million years. Generally, is it believed they lived from the late Triassic period (about 230 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous (about 65 million years ago). It is believed that climate change which was caused by a massive meteor strike in what is now the Yucatan Peninsula caused them, along with 90% of all animals on the planet, to go extinct.

Fossil records point to the dinosaurs being the ancestors to modern birds, and that they evolved within theropod dinosaurs during the Jurassic period. Dinosaurs remains have been found on every continent. The largest land animals ever to live were dinosaurs. Many were herbivorous while others carnivorous. There were some animals who moved on two legs (bipedal) and some on four (quadrupedal) Some shifted between these. During this times there were even flying dinosaurs called Pterosaurs. While many of the dinosaurs were massive, hulking animals weighing many tons, some were very small – only a few feet long at most.

Most groups of dinosaurs are known to have built nests and laid eggs. When dinosaur bones were first discovered in the 17th century in England, scientists began to piece together what they were and how they might have lived. For many decades, dinosaurs were believed to be slow moving, lumbering animals. But in the last few decades, researchers have begun to put together a much different picture; that dinosaurs were active, quick animals with high metabolisms and numerous specialized adaptations for social interaction.

Over the years, scientists have had to change their attitudes towards these animals, as more and more evidence comes to light showing these extinct animals to be anything but the sluggish, slow-witted animals they were once believed to be.

Allosaurus – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95
Fine art illustration of an Allosaurs (Allosaurus fragilis.)

Information about the Allosaurus:

The Allosaurus is an extinct dinosaur and member of the family Allosauridae. It was one of the first theropod dinosaurs to be discovered. Much of the fossil record comes from North American specimens, but some have also been found in Portugal. Allosaurus lived in the Mesozoic era, likely in the late Jurassic period, between about 154 and 115 million years ago. It was a very large predatory animal, reaching a height of about 28 feet (8.5 meters) and there is some fragmentary evidence that it could have been even larger - perhaps up to 40 feet (12 meters) The Allosaurus had an impressive set of large, sharp teeth. Like much dinosaur behavior, it is up to some speculation and conjecture as to how these large meat-eating animals hunted, but some paleontologists believe they might have hunted in packs, running down and attacking larger prey that they couldn't have brought down alone. Basilosaurus – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Basilosaurus:

The Basilosaurus is an extinct genus of cetaceans - which are marine mammals such as whales, dolphins and porpoises) - that lived during the late Eocene period (40 to 34 million years ago) When they were first discovered in the southern area of the United States it was believed to be a reptile, and that is why they have the suffix "saurus." But later on it was determined to be a marine mammal. Some of the genus grew to be about 60 feet long (18 meters) and believed to be the largest animal living at that time. It was a top predator and would have feared nothing in the ocean, except for those of it's own kind. Fossil specimens have been found having smaller Basilosauruses in their stomachs. The shape of the head wouldn't allow for a large brain, so it's likely that Basilosaurus didn't have the same heightened intelligence or social structures of modern whales. Basilosaurus is the state fossil of both Mississippi and Louisiana.

Coelophysis – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Coelophysis:

The Coelophysis is an extinct species of dinosaur, first described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1889. The name means "hollow form" which is a reference to the animal's hollow bones. It is one of the earliest known genera of dinosaur. The Coelophysis was a small biped that lived during the Late Triassic (Norian stage) This carnivore lived in what is now the southwestern United States. This lightweight and agile dinosaur grew to about 9 feet long (3 meters.) With it's large eyes it had exceptionally good eyesight. This animal likely feed exclusively on meat. While it might have been a scavenger, feeding on whatever dead animal it might have encountered it is also possible that it was a predator, hunting in packs or in pairs - which would make it easier to take down prey larger than itself. It is the official fossil of the state of New Mexico in the USA.

Duck-Billed Dinosaur – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Duck-Billed Dinosaur:

The genus name for the Duck-Billed Dinosaur - Maiasaura - comes from a combination of Greek words meaning "caring mother lizard." The Duck-Billed Dinosaur lived in the area that is not Montana in the USA, roughly 74 million years ago, which falls in the era of the mid to late Cambrian period. These were large animals, reaching about 30 feet long (9 meters) While there is some disagreement about the size and shape of the crest on the animals head, it was generally thought to be used for head-butting during the breeding season. It is also believed that it was a dinosaur that lived in herds and raised it's young. It is the state fossil of Montana. Hadrosaurus – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Hadrosaurus:

Hadrosaurus foulkii was a species of dinosaur native to the area that is now New Jersey. It is believed to have lived in the late Cretaceous period, which was about 136 million to 65 million years ago. Only one skeleton has even been unearthed, and this was found in in 1838 by John Estaugh, who was digging a pit when he discovered the bones. The site is now a National Historic Landmark. The Hadrosaurus became the first ever dinosaur skeleton to be mounted. Hadrosaurus was likely a plant eater and walked mostly on it's back legs. The Hadrosaurus was officially declared the state fossil of New Jersey in 1991.

Information about the Ichthyosaur:

The Ichthyosaur Shonisaurus is an extinct aquatic dinosaur and member of the family Shonisauridae. They are believed to have lived in the late Triassic period, about 215 million years ago. This fearsome predator is known from about 37 incomplete skeletons that have been found over the years, some of which were found in the Luning Formation in Nevada (of which that state selected the Shonisaurus as the state fossil in 1984.) The species was first found in a large deposit in Nevada in 1920. The Shonisaurus' name comes from "Lizard from the Shoshone Mountains" where it was first discovered.

Paluxysaurus – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Paluxysaurus:

Paluxysaurus was a species of Brachiosaur sauropod that lived roughly 95 to 112 million years ago in the Early Cretaceous period. This extinct dinosaur weighed an astonishing 20 tons, was 60 feet long and had a neck 26 feet long. It was originally categorized as Pleurocoelus, but in 2007, paleontologists re-identified the bones and footprints (left in the north and central parts of Texas) as Paluxysaurus Jonesi. The dinosaur is named for the town of Paluxy in Hood County and for the Paluxy River, which are both near the Jones Ranch site where the fossils of this species were discovered. Paluxysaurus Jonesi was designated as as the official state dinosaur of Texas in 1997.

Pteranodon – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Pteranodon:

The Pteranodon lived in the late Cretaceous period in what is now the central section of the North American continent. It perhaps the best known of the pterosaurs, due to the fact the fossil record has provided many excellent specimens. It was a massive flying reptile with a wingspan of about twenty feet (6 meters) While it is strongly indentified with dinosaurs, it was in fact not a member of the Saurischia and Ornithischia groups - which by definition all dinosaurs belong to - but a flying reptile. These large animals lived for approximately 4 million years, during the late Coniacian (which is the early Campanian stages of the Cretaceous period.) The Pteranodon appears to have fed mostly on fish, as some fossilized remains have been found in their stomachs. There is some debate as to whether or not there were in fact two species of Pteranodon, but as of yet only one has been clearly indentified.

Saurophaganax – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Saurophaganax:

The Saurophaganax - whose name means "lizard-eating master" is a genus of allosaurid dinosaur that lived in the from the Late Jurassic period, about 151 million years ago. Saurophaganax was discovered in 1931/32 by John Willis Stoval at a dig site near Kenton, Oklahoma. There is some discussion over exactly what genus this dinosaur is, and some paleontologists consider it to be a species of Allosaurus, but there is some disagreement on this point. This large and dangerous dinosaur was thought to have a maximum size of 34-43 feet long (10.5-13 meters) and weighing in the areas of around 3 tones (3.0 long tons; 3.3 short tons). It was a very large predator and likely the top of the food chain during it's existence. The Saurophaganax was named the official fossil of the state of Oklahoma.
