The Common or Eurasian Kingfisher is a widely distributed bird native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, mainly south of 60°N. It is a common breeding species over much of its vast Eurasian range, but in North Africa it is mainly a winter visitor, although it is a scarce breeding resident in coastal Morocco and Tunisia. In temperate regions, this kingfisher inhabits clear, slow-flowing streams and rivers, and lakes with well-vegetated banks. It frequents scrubs and bushes with overhanging branches close to shallow open water in which it hunts. In winter it is more coastal, often feeding in estuaries or harbors and along rocky seashores. Tropical populations are found by slow-flowing rivers, in mangrove creeks and in swamps. The Green Kingfisher is can be found from southern Texas in the USA south through Central America to central Argentina in South America. The Green Kingfisher is about 7.5 inches long (19 centimeters) weighing roughly an ounce (26 grams). Like other species of kingfisher, it has the distinctive long bill and short tail. Both the male and females are colored an emerald green-blue, but the males have white underparts apart from a broad chestnut breast band and some green spotting on the sides. They can been seen besides streams, slow moving rivers, lakes and ponds eyeing the water, then diving in to capture small fish and aquatic insects. There are six recognized sub-species. Kingfisher Species of the World Poster Print
