The Sierra Nevada Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog (formerly called the Rana muscosa - Mountain Yellow-legged Frog) is a species of "true" frog, divided into two separate species - the Southern and Northern. At one time these little amphibians were the most common frog found in the Sierra Nevada mountains. But due to a host of environmental pressures these frogs are now found in only about 7% of their original range. Generally only about 1 to 3.5 inches long (4-9 centimeters) they feed primarily on small invertebrates, both aquatic and terrestrial as well as tadpoles. While the frog is now considered endangered and protected in some areas, there is little being done as far as reestablishing them to their original range. It has the odd defense mechanism of smelling like garlic when handled by humans. The Buffy Fish Owl is a one of four species of fish owl. While it's a fairly large owl, it's the smallest of the fish owls. Adults are about 15-19 inches (38-48 cm.) Bubo ketupu is native to the dense tropical forests of Southeast Asia. As the name implies, a large proportion of the Buffy Fish Owl's diet consists of fish, as well as crustaceans, reptiles, frogs, toads and insects. Rats, mice and large beetles are also taken. They will sometimes take bats, and reportedly feed on carrion. Buffy Fish Owls fish from a perch an the water's edge, or from a tree on a wooded bank, swooping down to snatch prey from the water's surface. They will also walk in shallow streams to snatch crabs, frogs, fish and aquatic insects. The Silvertip Reef Shark is a species of requiem shark, which are typically migratory, live-bearing sharks of the warm oceans. These large predators are generally found worldwide, in patchy areas usually around coral reefs. Silvertip sharks can grow up to nearly ten feet long (3 meters) but usually measure in the area of 6 to 8 feet (2.0–2.5 meters) Like other sharks, the Silvertip feeds on bony fish, cephalopods like octopus and squid, smaller sharks and rays. While encountering one while diving can be a stressful experience, studies have shown that the sharks are usually just curious and will not normally attack humans, although attacks have been recorded, none have been fatal. Due to overfishing, especially due to the wasteful practice of catching them for sharkfin soup, this species is considered threatened.
