Pennsylvania Firefly – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Pennsylvania Firefly:

The Pennsylvania Firefly - also called the lightning bug and glowworm (in it's larval stage) is native to open fields, forests and pastures in the eastern part of North America. It is not a fly, but rather a member of the order Coleoptera, which are beetles. They are about 3/4 of an inch long (2 centimeters) They are naturally known for their use of bioluminescence, which it uses in both the larval stage and as an adult for dual purposes - to attract mates and also prey. The Pennsylvania Firefly feeds on a variety of invertebrates - such as other insects, flies and even land snails. Across North America there have been reports of declining numbers of fireflies in areas they were once very common. Overuse of harsh pesticides and herbicides along with the habitat loss required by larval life stages (especially in suburban and rural areas) coupled with the massive drought are all likely factors in the decline of the firefly. The Grapevine Beetle - also called the Spotted June Beetle or the Spotted Pelidnota - is a member of the subfamily Rutelinae of the Scarab beetle family. These insects are are fairly common in the north and central United States and Eastern Canada. They grow to be about 1 inch long (2.5 cm) While some beetles can cause massive damage to crops the Grapevile Beetles does relatively little damage to their host plants. The beetles fly at a fast speed, usually in a curving flight. There are many color variations, so many that at one time there was thought to be ten subspecies (these were all eventually discarded and there are no subspecies) Like many other beetles they are found in forests, thickets, and woods, and is mostly seen during the summer. Active flyers, these beetles are commonly attracted to lights at night. It is also seen in vineyards and gardens, which is what gives the beetle it's common name. The adult beetle eats the leaves and fruit of grapevines, both wild and cultivated, although it is not normally a major pest of vineyards. Beetle eggs are laid in rotten wood, tree stumps, or on soil near the host plant, where they hatch into larvae. Larvae then dig their way into the soil, where they feed on rotted wood. Pupal chambers are built shallowly underground. The legs, especially the front pair, and strongly serrated, and notably adapted for burrowing. The wing covers have faint but visible converging creases. The genus is not found anywhere else in North America, although related species live all across Eurasia. Though originally believed to be introduced, the species is distinct from any known members of Ceratophyus known from the Old World. The Red-Bellied Woodpecker is a medium sized bird, native to the forests of the Mid-West and Eastern parts of North America.
