The Whooper Swan is a large bird native to the Northern Hemisphere. The length of these swans is 55-56 inches (140–165 cm) with a wingspan of 81-108 inches (205–275 cm). These birds require large bodies of water, and are rarely seen far from them. Because of their weight, their legs cannot support them for any great length of time and they need the buoyancy of the water to help them. Their name comes from the loud honking or whooping sound they make. They are very strong flyers, and can migrate hundreds or even thousands of miles to reach their breeding grounds. Due to overhunting the Wood Ducks was almost exterminated in the late 1800s, but thanks to the passing of laws to protect them the Wood Ducks is the most common waterfowl species breeding in the US. It is the official waterfowl of the state of Mississippi. The Tufted Puffin - also called the Crested Puffin - is a pelagic seabird and and member of the Auk family. It is native to the oceans and coastlines of the North Pacific Ocean. It is one of three members of the Fratercula genus. They are about 15 inches tall (35 cm) The males being somewhat larger than the females. Like the other three puffin species, the Tufted Puffin feeds almost exclusively on fish, which are caught by diving from the surface. Their wings are smaller and are more adapted for for underwater swimming than flight. Occasionally squid or other cephalopods are eaten. They can carry a large amount of fish in their bills and bring them back to the nest to feed their young. The Trumpeter Swan is the heaviest bird native to North America and is the largest waterfowl species on the planet. Adults usually grown to 54–65 inches long (138–165 centimeters) - although large males can be slightly larger. They are very heavy birds, weighing up to 15–30 pounds (7–13.6 kilograms) Wingspan ranges from (73 to 98 inches (185 to 250 centimeters.) These birds were once on the edge of extinction, due to overhunting for their feathers and lead poisoning due to shotgun pellets. There has been several programs that have attempted to reintroduce them into their native range with only moderate results. Despite these challenges the IUCN considers them to not be threatened (although the state of Minnesota has them listed as threatened.)
