The Mute Swan is a member of the family Anatidae, which includes ducks and geese. This large bird is native to much of Europe and Asia, but has also been successfully introduced into North America. These are very adaptable animals, and readily adapt to life in cities and other urban environments. The name comes from the fact that this species is much less vocal than other swans. These large birds are about 49 to 67 inches long (125 to 170 cm) with a 79-94 inch wingspan (200 to 240 cm) wingspan. The Horned Puffin is a pelagic seabirds of the family Alcidae. They are somewhat similar looking to penguins due to their coloration of black and white, but they are not closely related. Horned Puffins feed primarily on fish. They choose the rocky, isolated islands off the coast of Alaska, British Columbia and Siberia to breed, but spend much of the winter far out to sea. Rarely, some individuals will wander down the coast as far south as California. Because of it's colorful bill the Horned Puffin is occasionally called the 'sea parrot.' The Long-Tailed duck - also called the Oldsquaw (although this name is less commonly used as of late as it has negative connotations with American Indians- is a medium-sized sea duck. They are members of the Anatidae family. Their name comes for the remarkably long tail the birds possess. Male are about 19-22" (48-56 cm) long (not including the tail )with the females being slightly smaller 15-17" (38-43 cm). Long-tailed ducks reside in a variety of habitats. Generally, they winter in the open ocean or large lakes and summer in pools or lakes in the tundra These ducks breed in Alaska and Arctic Canada. Winters along coasts from Bering Sea south to California, from Labrador south to Carolinas, along portions of Gulf Coast, and on Great Lakes. Mandarin Duck – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Mandarin Duck:
The Mandarin Duck is a medium-sized, East Asian perching duck, closely related to the North American Wood Duck. It is 41–49 cm long with a 65–75 cm wingspan. The adult male is a striking and unmistakable bird. It has a red bill, large white crescent above the eye and reddish face and "whiskers". The breast is purple with two vertical white bars, and the flanks ruddy, with two orange "sails" at the back. The female is similar to female Wood Duck, with a white eye-ring and stripe running back from the eye, but is paler below, has a small white flank stripe, and a pale tip to its bill. The Mandarin ducklings are almost identical in look to Wood ducklings, and appear very similar to Mallard ducklings. The ducklings can be distinguished from Mallard ducklings because the eye-stripe of Mandarin ducklings stops at the eye, while in Mallard ducklings it reaches all the way to the bill. The species was once widespread in eastern Asia, but large-scale exports and the destruction of its forest habitat have reduced populations in eastern Russia and in China to below 1,000 pairs in each country; Japan, however, is thought to still hold some 5,000 pairs. Hooded Mergansers are small ducks, growing to about 13 inches long and having a 26 inch wingspan. They are the only members of the genus Lophodytes, and there are only three other mergansers that occur in North America. They feed by diving underwater collecting fish, amphibians, aquatic insects and crustaceans as they swim. Like many ducks the Hooded Merganser is sexually dimorphic. These ducks prefer fast moving streams with shorelines full of dead trees. The Harlequin Duck is a smaller, ocean going species of waterfowl. They are also called painted ducks, totem pole ducks, rock ducks and mountain ducks. It is also called the "Sea Mouse" due to the very odd, mouse-like squeaks it can emit. These birds are native to the northern coastal areas of North America, on both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The birds feed by what is called "dabbling" - this mean the animal feeds mostly along the surface of the water, or by tipping head-first into the water to graze on aquatic plants and vegetation. While, overall, the Harlequin Duck's populations are stable, those on the Pacific side of North America are declining and are considered endangered. This decline is likely to habitat loss, oil spills and the building of several hydroelectric plants. The Flightless Cormorant is a member of the Phalacrocoracidae family - which includes some forty species of cormorant and shags. It is a highly unusual bird, as through the process of evolution over many thousands of the years the animal has lost the ability to fly, and instead can only walk and swim. Like other cormorants, it has webbed feet and is an excellent swimmer. This species is the largest extant member of the family being 35–40 inches (89–100 centimeters) in length and weighing 5-6 pounds (2.5–5.0 kilograms. The bird is found on only two of the Galapagos Islands (Fernandina and Isabela) There are only about 1,500 individuals in existence today making it one of the most rare birds on the planet. The Hawaiian Goose or Nene is a species of bird native to the islands of Hawaii (found only on Maui, Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi.) The name "Nene" comes from the the call of the bird, which is quite soft. It is believed the Nene evolved from the Canadian Goose, which likely came to the islands thousands of years before. While these birds spend most of their time on the ground, they are quite capable fliers. They are herbivores, feeding on leaves, grasses, shrubs, and even flowers. At one time these birds were very common in the Hawaiian Islands, but due to the introduction of non-native species, their numbers have drastically declined and they are now the rarest species of geese in the world. Conservation programs have brought the birds back from the edge of extinction however and there are about 800 in the wild. The Nene was designated the state bird of Hawaii in 1957. Common Mergansers - called "Goosanders" is Eurasia - is a large duck found in and around rivers, lakes and other forested areas with bodies of water near by. The ducks are about 23–28 inches long (58–72 cm) with a wingspan of 31–38 inches (78–97 cm) They weigh roughly 2.0–4.6 pounds (0.9–2.1 kg) and the males averaging slightly larger than females. They have a very large range, from Europe to Eurasia, westward into much of North America. It is a skilled predator feeding on fish and crustaceans, which they pursue underneath the water and snap up with it's formidable teeth. There are three recognized subspecies. While they are very agile in the water and air, they are somewhat clumsy on land, occasionally stumbling and falling when walking. The Elegant Tern is a seabird belonging to the family Sternidae. It is a medium-sized bird, with a distinctive shaggy crest and a bright orange bill that points somewhat downwards. They grown to a length of about 15.4–16.5 inches (39–42 cm) with wingspan of 42 inches (107 cm). They are a common slight along the Pacific Coastline from British Columbia all the way down to nearly the tip of South America. The Elegant Tern feeds on fish, which it catches by dive bombing the water from above. It will fly over water with the beak pointing down, then dramatically plunge into water to catch its prey. Nearly of all Elegant Terns nest in one colony on Isla Rasa in the Gulf of California, Mexico. They are adept at exploiting areas altered by humans and in some cities are considered a nuisance species. Due to over hunting and habitat loss the species was in serious decline during the first part of the 20th century, but the species has since recovered and is flourishing in many areas.
