The Common or Eurasian Kingfisher is a widely distributed bird native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, mainly south of 60°N. It is a common breeding species over much of its vast Eurasian range, but in North Africa it is mainly a winter visitor, although it is a scarce breeding resident in coastal Morocco and Tunisia. In temperate regions, this kingfisher inhabits clear, slow-flowing streams and rivers, and lakes with well-vegetated banks. It frequents scrubs and bushes with overhanging branches close to shallow open water in which it hunts. In winter it is more coastal, often feeding in estuaries or harbors and along rocky seashores. Tropical populations are found by slow-flowing rivers, in mangrove creeks and in swamps. The Forster's Tern is a smaller member of the family Sternidae. It's about 13-14 inches long (33-36 cm) with a wingspan of 25-28 inches (64-70 cm.) It's closely resembled the Common Tern but has a gray center to it's white tail. The Forster's tern feeds by plunge-diving for fish, but will also hawk for insects in its breeding marshes. It usually feeds from saline environments in winter, like most Sterna terns. It normally dives directly, and not from the "stepped-hover" favored by the Arctic tern. The Cattle Egret species of heron (family Ardeidae) found in the tropics, subtropics and warm temperate zones. It is the only member of the monotypic genus Bubulcus. It nests in colonies, usually near bodies of water and often with other wading birds. The nest is a platform of sticks in trees or shrubs. Cattle egrets exploit drier and open habitats more than other heron species. Their feeding habitats include seasonally inundated grasslands, pastures, farmlands, wetlands and rice paddies. They often accompany cattle or other large mammals, catching insect and small vertebrate prey disturbed by these animals. This species maintains a special relationship with cattle, which extends to other large grazing mammals; wider human farming is believed to be a major cause of their suddenly expanded range. The cattle egret removes ticks and flies from cattle and eats them. The Brown Pelican of the smallest of the eight species of pelican. Despite being a small pelican, it is a large bird, being 42–54 inches in length (106–137 centimeters, weighing between 6.1 to 12 pounds (2.75 to 5.5 kilograms) with a wingspan from 6.0 to 8.2 feet (1.83 to 2.5 meters.) They birds are native to both sides of the North American Continent on the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts. They are very gregarious birds, flocking in large numbers. Like all pelicans, these birds use their enormous bills to catch food, diving bombing their prey from several feet above the water, then allowing the water to drain out they swallow whatever fish they've caught. The widespread use of DDT in the 70's dramatically threatened their population, and in some places they were nearly exterminated. With the banning of DDT their numbers have rebounded and now enjoy a stable, healthy population in most of their native range. The Boat-Billed Heron Heron - sometimes just called a "boatbill" is an atypical member of the heron family. It was formerly thought to be in a monotypic family, Cochlearidae but has since been moved into family Ardeidae. It's native the warm mangrove swamps from Mexico south to Peru and Brazil. It is a nocturnal bird, and breeds semi-colonially in mangrove trees, laying 2-4 bluish white eggs in a twig nest. The boat-billed heron is about 21 inches long (54 cm). The massive broad scoop-like bill, which gives rise to this species' name, is mainly black. This wading birds feeds on primarily on fish, rodents, eggs, crustaceans, insects and amphibians.
