The Demoiselle Crane is a species of bird found in central Eurasia, ranging from the Black Sea to Mongolia and North Eastern China. There is also a small breeding population in Turkey. They are migratory birds, traveling from western Eurasia to spend the winters in Africa, whereas the birds from Asia, Mongolia and China will spend the winter in the Indian subcontinent. The Demoiselle Crane lives in a variety of different environments, including desert areas and numerous types of grasslands (flooded, mountain, temperate and tropical grassland) which are often close to streams or lakes. However, when nesting, they prefer patchy areas of vegetation which is tall enough to conceal them and their nests, yet short enough to allow them look out for predators whilst incubating their eggs. Demoiselle Cranes have to take one of the toughest migrations in the world; In late August through September, they gather in flocks of up to 400 individuals and prepare for their flight to their winter range. During their migratory flight south, Demoiselles fly like all cranes, with their head and neck straight forward and their feet and legs straight behind, reaching altitudes of 16,000-26,000 feet (4,875-7,925 meters). Along their arduous journey they have to cross the Himalayan mountains to get to their over-wintering grounds in India. The bird is symbolically significant in the culture of North India and Pakistan, where it is known as the koonj. The Desert Blister Beetle is a species of blister beetle found in southwestern North America. Typically 16 to 33 mm (0.6 to 1.3 in) in length, L. magister has a striking red head, legs and prothorax, with black elytra. They can be found in great numbers in the Mojave and Colorado Deserts in spring, and are often seen in swarms. Females lay eggs in holes in the desert soil. The larvae are insectivorous, mainly attacking bee nests. They consume the immature host along with its provisions, and can often survive on the provisions alone, thus they are not obligatory parasitoids but rather food parasites that are parasitoid, or simply predatory. Adults feed on flowers and leaves of brittlebush. The Desert Box Turtle is a member of the family Emydidae, which are the pond turtles or marsh turtles, or box turtles. This small reptiles is native to arid and semi-arid regions from the Trans-Pecos area of Texas, New Mexico, and southeastern Arizona in the United States and south into Sonora and Chihuahua in Mexico. The Desert Box Turtle is omnivorous and will feed on vegetation, insects and even carrion if it's able to find it. The turtle will also root around in cow dung looking for beetles to feed on. This box turtle, like all of the related species are highly prized as pets and are often collected and kept in captivity. The Desert Cardinal or Pyrrhuloxia is a medium-sized member of the order of Passeriformes. It is native to the deserts and scrublands of the southwestern parts of North America. It is one of only three birds of the genus Cardinalis, with the Northern and Vermillion Cardinals being the other two. These birds go to lengths of about 8.3 inches (21 cm) with an the average weight is 0.8–1.5 ounces (24–43 g). Both males and females are about the same size. Pyrrhuloxia does not generally migrate, but spends the year round in the dry deserts and mesquite thickets, where it feeds on fruits, seed and insects. The bird gets it's distinctive name "Pyrrhuloxia" from a combination of the genus names Pyrrhula (bullfinches) and Loxia (crossbills). The roots mean "flame-colored" and "crooked," and accurately describe the bright reddish gray bird with the crooked bill. They look a great deal like the European Rabbit, but the ears of Sylvilagus audubonii are usually larger and held upright more often. They also do not inhabit large social warrens like their European relatives. These mammals are usually active only in the morning and later afternoon into early evening, and are rarely seen during mid-day. They are often predated on by a variety of animals such as eagles, hawks, coyote, bobcats and weasels. The Desert Horned Viper, is also called the Saharan Horned Viper, African Desert Horned Viper and Asp - is a venomous snake native to the deserts of Northern Africa and parts of the Middle East.
