The Flightless Cormorant is a member of the Phalacrocoracidae family - which includes some forty species of cormorant and shags. It is a highly unusual bird, as through the process of evolution over many thousands of the years the animal has lost the ability to fly, and instead can only walk and swim. Like other cormorants, it has webbed feet and is an excellent swimmer. This species is the largest extant member of the family being 35–40 inches (89–100 centimeters) in length and weighing 5-6 pounds (2.5–5.0 kilograms. The bird is found on only two of the Galapagos Islands (Fernandina and Isabela) There are only about 1,500 individuals in existence today making it one of the most rare birds on the planet. The Florida Horse Conch (Latin name Triplofusus giganteus but at one time referred to as Pleuroploca gigantic) is a very large gastropod native to the warm coastal waters of North America from North Carolina south to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. It is the largest gastropods in the Americas, and one of the largest univalves on the planet, with a shell that can reach 24 inches (60 centimeters.) While not a "true" conch, is is like some of the genus of Strombus a predatory sea snail. When the snail is smaller the coloration of the shell is quite vivid and bright, but this coloration tends to fade as the animal ages, with the shell becoming more gray and white. The snail is commonly found in weed and mud flats from the low intertidal to shallow subtidal zones, usually in about 20 feet or water (6 meters.) It is the official shell of the state of Florida in the US. Florida panthers are a subspecies of cougar native to the forests and swamps of southern Florida. These large cars are officially listed as an endangered species by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The population was estimated to be 30 to 50 animals in 1993, and current numbers are believed to be only about 100, and most of these animals living exclusively in state and nationals parks. While their numbers are still small, thanks to very aggressive conservation efforts the numbers are on the rise. Radio collar monitoring and camera traps are being used to help save this endangered cat. The biggest threat to the panther is habitat loss due to development as well as interbreeding with the more common Mountain Lion. The Fly River Turtle - also called the Pig-Nosed Turtle - is an aquatic freshwater reptile native to northern Australia and Southern New Guinea. It is a fairly unique species of freshwater turtle; their feet are flippers, resembling those of marine turtles. The nose looks like that of a pig, having the nostrils at the end of a fleshy snout, hence the common name. The carapace is typically grey or olive, with a leathery texture, while the plastron is cream-colored. Males can be distinguished from females by their longer and narrower tails. Pig-nosed turtles can grow to about 70 cm (28 in) shell-length, with a weight of over 20 kg (44 lb). They are occasionally kept as pets in aquariums. The species is omnivorous, eating a wide variety of plant and animal matter, including the fruit and leaves of figs, as well as crustaceans, mollusks and insects. The species experienced a population decline of more than 50% in the thirty years between 1981 and 2011. The Forster's Tern is a smaller member of the family Sternidae. It's about 13-14 inches long (33-36 cm) with a wingspan of 25-28 inches (64-70 cm.) It's closely resembled the Common Tern but has a gray center to it's white tail. The Forster's tern feeds by plunge-diving for fish, but will also hawk for insects in its breeding marshes. It usually feeds from saline environments in winter, like most Sterna terns. It normally dives directly, and not from the "stepped-hover" favored by the Arctic tern.
