Information about the Hooded Crane:
The Hooded Crane is one of the smaller of the world's cranes. It stands about 3.3 feet tall (1 meter) a weights about 8.2 pounds (3.7 kg) It has a wingspan of over 6.2 feet (1.87 m). The Hooded Crane breeds in south-central and south-eastern Siberia. Breeding is also suspected to occur in Mongolia. Over 80% of its population winters at Izumi, southern Japan. There are also wintering grounds in South Korea and China. There are about 100 hooded cranes wintering in Chongming Dongtan, Shanghai every year. Dongtan Nature reserve is the largest natural wintering site in the world. The estimated population of the species is 9,500 individuals. The major threats to its survival are wetland loss and degradation in its wintering grounds in China and South Korea as a result of reclamation for development and dam building. Conservation activities have been taken since 2008. Local universities, NGOs and communities are working together for a better and safer wintering location. The Hooded Crane is evaluated as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. A society, Grus monacha International Aid has been formed to find ways to protect the species. Hooded Mergansers are small ducks, growing to about 13 inches long and having a 26 inch wingspan. They are the only members of the genus Lophodytes, and there are only three other mergansers that occur in North America. They feed by diving underwater collecting fish, amphibians, aquatic insects and crustaceans as they swim. Like many ducks the Hooded Merganser is sexually dimorphic. These ducks prefer fast moving streams with shorelines full of dead trees. The Hopkin's Rose is a species of sea slug. The tentacle like structures on its dorsal surface are fairly uncommon for a dorid nudibranch. Because of this and the pink coloration it is sometimes mistaken for a sea anemone. These nudibranchs ranges from Oregon to Baja California, and is especially common around Monterey, California. It feeds on another pink animal, the bryozoan (Eurystomella bilabiata) which are found under rocks in the low tide zone and below, from Southern California to Alaska.
