Information about the Birds:
Birds – the Class of Aves – are animals who are feathered, winged, bipedal, warm-blooded and lay eggs. Based upon the fossil evidence, many scientists believe that birds are today’s descendants of the dinosaurs. There are about 10,000 species of birds known to science alive on the planet today.
The smallest is the bee hummingbird at a mere 2 inches (5 cm) and the largest is the ostrich which grows to 9 feet (2.74 m). Birds have no teeth, a four chambered heart and a very lightweight but durable skeleton, generally with hollow bones. All living species of birds have wings in some form, and only the extinct Moa did not.
They are bright animals, with parrots and corvids (crows, jays, ravens, magpies) being especially smart and excellent at problem solving. Many birds migrate hundred or thousands of miles each year, usually for warmer climates to breed. Birds are one of the few animals that are found on all seven continents on the planet.

The drawing of an Allen's Hummingbird was completed on 5.14.2011. This is the fifth illustration I've done of a hummingbird. Like the previous images, I chose to show the bird in flight, as I think this is the most attractive view of the animal. American Bittern – Signed Fine Art Print

The American Bittern is a smaller, stocky brown bird and a member of the Ardeidae family. They inhabit soggy meadows, bogs and swamps where they stalk prey - usually small amphibians, fish and invertebrates - among the cattails and bullrushes. It's camouflage is superb, and if it believes it's been spotted, it becomes completely still and blend with it's surroundings, or it may choose to extend it's next upwards and sway with the breeze to hide itself. It can be found throughout much of North America, and is a rare visitor to Great Britain and continental Europe. It winters in the southern US, down into Central America. They are the smallest falcon in North America - being not much larger than a robin. Rarely these birds are found in western Europe. They are found in open areas when they can hunt prey, but they're also found in parks, suburbs, open fields, forest edges and openings, alpine zones, grasslands, marshes, prairies, deserts with large cacti, and freeway and highway corridors. While they are skilled hunters they will occasionally steal prey from other birds and even other of their own species. Instead, they dip their heads underwater to scoop up fish.
