The Flightless Cormorant is a member of the Phalacrocoracidae family - which includes some forty species of cormorant and shags. It is a highly unusual bird, as through the process of evolution over many thousands of the years the animal has lost the ability to fly, and instead can only walk and swim. Like other cormorants, it has webbed feet and is an excellent swimmer. This species is the largest extant member of the family being 35–40 inches (89–100 centimeters) in length and weighing 5-6 pounds (2.5–5.0 kilograms. The bird is found on only two of the Galapagos Islands (Fernandina and Isabela) There are only about 1,500 individuals in existence today making it one of the most rare birds on the planet. Very extensive conversation projects are working towards preserving this unique species. The Forster's Tern is a smaller member of the family Sternidae. It's about 13-14 inches long (33-36 cm) with a wingspan of 25-28 inches (64-70 cm.) It's closely resembled the Common Tern but has a gray center to it's white tail. The Forster's tern feeds by plunge-diving for fish, but will also hawk for insects in its breeding marshes. It usually feeds from saline environments in winter, like most Sterna terns. It normally dives directly, and not from the "stepped-hover" favored by the Arctic tern. The Galapagos Penguin is a mostly aquatic bird native to some of the islands of the Galapagos Archipelago. It is the only penguin that lives north of the equator. They are generally found on Fernandina Island and the west coast of Isabela Island. They are a member of the banded penguins - which are share several of the same kind of psychical traits such as a band of black running around their bodies bordering their black dorsal coloring, black beaks with a small vertical white band, spots on their bellies, and a small patch of thinly feathered skin around their eyes that can be either white or pinkish.
