Roadrunners are two species of flightless birds that can be found in the arid open areas of North and Central America. They are members of the cuckoo family. Roadrunners generally range from about 18 to 24 inches long from the tip of the tail to the beak. As the name indicated they are fast runners and can top out at about 15 MPH. While they cannot sustain prolonged flight they will use their wings to become airborne to escape predators. They are opportunistic feeders and will eat whatever lizards and insects they are able to catch along with other birds, eggs as well as fruits and seeds. They will even attack and kill rattlesnakes given the chance. Roadrunners are monogamous and will mate for life. The roadrunner is the state bird of New Mexico. The Greater Spotted Eagle is a large bird of prey, being about 23–28 inches long (59–71 cm) with a wingspan of 5.15–5.87 feet (157–179 cm). They are native to the wooded areas of northern Europe eastwards across Asia, and winters in south-eastern Europe, north-eastern Africa, the Middle East and southern Asia. Like other eagles, the Spotted Eagle hunts for prey - usually small mammals, birds and reptiles - from the air swooping down on them and grabbing with their razor sharp claws. Due to habitat loss and illegal hunting this species has been declared vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN. The Greater Yellowlegs is a large North American shorebird. They are generally found in and around freshwater ponds and tidal marshes. It is about 14" (36 cm) long with a wingspan of 23.6 inches (60 cm.) Adults have long yellow legs and a long, thin, dark bill which has a slight upward curve and is longer than the head. These birds forage in shallow water, sometimes using their bills to stir up the water. They mainly eat insects and small fish, as well as crustaceans and marine worms. It often walks in sand or mud and leaves clear tracks; it can be possible to gather information about this species using its tracks. The call is harsher than that of the Lesser Yellowlegs. The Green Heron is a small, stocky wading bird of the family Ardeidae. They grow to about 17 inches long with a wingspan of 25 inches. These birds are native to swamps (especially mangrove swamps) bogs and other low-lying wetlands of the southern parts of North America down into Central America and into northern South America. Like other herons they patrol the shores and shallow areas looking for fish, frogs and invertebrates. Occasionally the Green Heron will drop food, insects or other objects into the water to attract fish. Very few other birds have learned this "tool-using" ability. The Green Kingfisher is can be found from southern Texas in the USA south through Central America to central Argentina in South America. The Green Kingfisher is about 7.5 inches long (19 centimeters) weighing roughly an ounce (26 grams). Like other species of kingfisher, it has the distinctive long bill and short tail. Both the male and females are colored an emerald green-blue, but the males have white underparts apart from a broad chestnut breast band and some green spotting on the sides. They can been seen besides streams, slow moving rivers, lakes and ponds eyeing the water, then diving in to capture small fish and aquatic insects. There are six recognized sub-species. It can be found in a variety of environments, such as primary and secondary forest, both tropical and subtropical, as well as evergreen and deciduous. It is one of three extant species of peafowl, the other two being the Blue or Indian Peafowl and the Congo Peafowl. Unlike the relative Blue Peafowl the sexes look fairly similar. Due to habitat loss and illegal poaching the species is considered endangered by the IUCN and other environmental organizations. It is the official symbol of the nation of Myanmar.
