Information about the Little Blue Heron:
The Little Blue Heron is a wading shore bird in the family Ardeidae. It's range is from the Gulf States in the US, south through Central America and into Peru and Uruguay in South America. It can also be found in islands in the Caribbean. The bird is about 24 inches long (60 cm) with a 40 inch wingspan (102 cm). The Little Blue Heron prefers sub-tropical marshes and swamps. Like other herons, it breed in colonies in large trees or thick bushes. It is a very adept hunter, feeding on fish, amphibians, crustaceans and large insects. It is often found in the presence of Snowy Egrets, and examination shows that the bird benefit from this, catching more fish and being better protected from predators. In their juvenile stage, they remain white for their first year. It could be because of the added benefits of staying close to the Snowy Egrets. The Purple Heron is a large wading bird, growing to be about 31-38 inches long (78–97 cm) with a standing height from 28-37 inches (70 to 94 cm) and a wingspan of 47-60 inches (120–152 cm) However, it is slender for its size, weighing only 1.2-3 pounds (0.5–1.35 kg) They are members of the family Ardeidae. They breed in Africa, central and southern Europe, and southern and eastern Asia. The European populations are migratory, wintering in tropical Africa; the more northerly Asian populations also migrate further south within Asia. It is a rare but regular wanderer north of its breeding range. These graceful wading birds are common in sloughs, estuaries, shallow slow moving streams, lakes, coastal wetlands, marshes throughout North America. They are also commonly found in urban areas as well as cities as long as there is a food source for them. They are opportunistic feeders and will eat amphibians, small invertebrates, reptiles and fish. They birds will slowly move through shallow waters, plumbing the muck hoping to scare up prey.
