Polyphemus Moth – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Polyphemus Moth:

The Polyphemus Moth is a is a North American member of the family Saturniidae, the giant silk moths. It has an average wingspan of about 6 inches (15 cm). The most notable feature of the moth is its large, purplish eyespots on its two hindwings. The eye spots are where it gets its name – from the Greek myth of the Cyclops Polyphemus. The species is widespread in continental North America, with local populations found throughout subarctic Canada and the United States. Differentiating between sexes of this species is easy. The most obvious difference is the plumose antennae. Males will have very bushy antennae while females will have moderately less bushy antennae. The male's bushy antennae are used to detect pheromones released by unmated females. Another difference is that the females will be slightly larger in the abdomen due to carrying eggs. There is a surprising amount of variation within this species. Color patterns can range from a reddish-cinnamon to a dark brown but are almost always a shade of brown. Red Admiral Butterfly – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Red Admiral Butterfly:

The Red Admiral Butterfly is a commonly seen butterfly native to moist meadows, open fields and well-watered urban areas in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. It has a wingspan of 1.8–2.0 inches (45–50 mm.) The caterpillar feeds on nettles, and the adult drinks from flowering plants like the Buddleia and overripe fruit. In northern Europe, it is one of the last butterflies to be seen before winter sets in, often feeding on the flowers of ivy on sunny days. The Red Admiral is also known to hibernate, re-emerging individuals showing prominently darker colorings than first brood subjects. The butterfly also flies on sunny winter days, especially in southern Europe. In North America, the Red Admiral generally has two broods from March through October. Most of North America must be re-colonized each spring by southern migrants, but this species over-winters in south Texas. Red Admirals are considered to be people-friendly butterflies that will approach and perch on human beings.
