The Death's-Head Hawkmoth is a large Sphingid moth found in India and much of Asia. It's one of the three species of Death's-head Hawkmoth, also known as the Bee Robber. It is nocturnal, and very fond of honey; they can mimic the scent of honey bees so that they can enter a hive unharmed to get honey. Their tongue, which is powerful enables them to pierce the wax cells and suck the honey out. This species occurs from India, Pakistan and Nepal to the Philippines, and from southern Japan and the southern Russian Far East to Indonesia, where it attacks colonies of several different honey bee species. The Imperial Moth are members of the Saturniidae family, which are the large silk moths. It is a large New World Moth, ranging from Mexico to Canada and from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Coast. It has been recorded historically from New England and southern Canada, south to the Gulf of Mexico and west across the Great Plains. In modern times, its range has receded northward. There is a high amount of variation within this species. The colors of the adult are always yellow and purple but can vary distinctly on this. Generally there is more purple on the forewing and more purple on males. Females are generally a little larger than the males, and can lay up to 200 eggs during breeding season. Io Moth – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Io Moth:
The Io Moth is a North American member of the Saturniidae family. This colorful moth's range is from from the southeast corner of Manitoba and in the southern extremes of Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick in Canada, and in the US it is found from Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, east of those states and down to the southern end of Florida. The Io Moth has a wingspan of about 2.5-3.5 inches (63-88 mm). The species is sexually dimorphic, males having bright yellow forewings, body, and legs, while the females have reddish brown forewings, body, and legs. Males have much bigger plumose (feathery) antennae than the females. Common to both sexes are the distinctive large black to bluish eyespot with some white in the center, on each hindwing. These spots serve as a defense mechanism meant to frighten off potential predators, especially when the moth is in the head-down position.
