Oregon Hairy Triton – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Oregon Hairy Triton:
The Oregon Hairy Triton is a member of the Gastropoda family, which are marine mollusks. It is a large predatory snail. It can be found along the coastline from Alaska, all the way down the Pacific Coast to California. They are also found on the other side of the ocean in Northern Japan. While not much is really know about the feeding habit of these snails, it is believed they prey on other mollusks and perhaps even sea urchins. Despite the common name, they are not hairy, but instead are covered with periostracum, which is a thin organic coating or "skin" which is the outermost layer of the shell. The name was given to honor the Oregon Territory by conchologist John Howard Redfield in 1846. Many decades later this gastropod was named the official state shell of Oregon. Sea Lemon – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Sea Lemon:
The Sea Lemon is a nudibranch, usually growing to about 1-3 inches (25-75mm) but is can grow much larger. This species may produce a lot of sweet, fruity-smelling mucus when disturbed, and this will cause some predators to release them. They are native to coastal waters from Kodiak Island, Alaska to Isla Coronados in Baja, California. These gastropods are common in low intertidal, on rocky shores and in and around harbor pilings. This is the largest of California nudibranchs. It has a penetrating, fruity odor, which may be used to fend off predators. It feeds on a variety of sponges. It may also ingest quantities of organic detritus. Studies show that individual nudibranchs are conservative in their food habits; they tend to keep eating the same food species, even if they are transferred to other sites. Spawning period varies with location, but extend for several months. The mating is reciprocal; partners may be of vastly different size. Buy a Digital Download
