The Giant Leopard Moth is a member of the family family Arctiidae. It's found in much of the Southern and Eastern United States, from New England to Mexico. The moth has a wingspan of 3 inches (about 8 cm). The abdomen is dark blue with orange markings, the male has a narrow yellow line on the sides. Its legs have black and white bands. Adult moths are strictly nocturnal and do not generally fly before nightfall. The caterpillar is of the "Woolly Bear" kind, with a thick coat of black bristles (setae) and red or orange colored bands between its segments which become conspicuous when the caterpillar rolls into a ball for defense. They use their coloration as camouflage to blend in with plants. The species is sometimes incorrectly thought to be endangered, but has never been listed either in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species or under the United States Endangered Species Act. It belongs to the large and very diverse family Scarabaeidae, along with June beetles, rain beetles and rhinoceros beetles.
