The Grapevine Beetle - also called the Spotted June Beetle or the Spotted Pelidnota - is a member of the subfamily Rutelinae of the Scarab beetle family. These insects are are fairly common in the north and central United States and Eastern Canada. They grow to be about 1 inch long (2.5 cm) While some beetles can cause massive damage to crops the Grapevile Beetles does relatively little damage to their host plants. The beetles fly at a fast speed, usually in a curving flight. There are many color variations, so many that at one time there was thought to be ten subspecies (these were all eventually discarded and there are no subspecies) Like many other beetles they are found in forests, thickets, and woods, and is mostly seen during the summer. Active flyers, these beetles are commonly attracted to lights at night. It is also seen in vineyards and gardens, which is what gives the beetle it's common name.
