The Blue Dasher is a dragonfly of the skimmer family. It is common and widely distributed in the United States, Canada south through Mexico and Belize, the Bahamas and Cuba and it one of the mostly commonly encountered species of dragonfly in North America. Although the species name longipennis means "long wings", oddly enough the wings are not particularly long for a dragonfly.
