The Zebra Longwing Butterfly is a member of the family Nymphalidae.It is normally found over large areas of North, South and Central America.In North America, it is mostly found in the southern states of Florida, Virginia, North and South Carolina and Georgia. While it tends to prefer wooded thickets and hardwood forests it is also found in urban areas and gardens, wherever it can find food. The caterpillar of the species feeds on the nectar of flowers, such as the passionflower, whereas the adults eat both nectar and the pollen of flowers which is thought to be unique in butterfly species. This behavior is believed to contribute to the Zebra Longwing's longer than normal lifespan of six months. In 1996 it was declared the official butterfly for the state of Florida in the USA. The Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly is a member of the family Papilionidae, which include over 550 species of swallowtail butterflies - most of which are native to the tropics. Eurytides marcellus is native to areas of the eastern US and southeastern Canada, rarely straying from the plant the Pawpaw on which it is strongly dependent on for food and a host for the cocoon, pupae and nectar for the adult (although the adult will feed on other plants, as well as rotting fruit and even urine. The caterpillar only feeds on the pawpaw plant however. These plants are generally found in woodlands, prairies and savannahs.
