The Baird's Tapir is one of four extant species of tapir on earth, and the largest of the three species in Latin America. It is named for the noted American naturalist Spencer Fullerton Baird, who was in Mexico in 1843 and observed them. However, the animal was in fact first described by another American naturalist W.T. The Black-Footed Ferret - also called the American Polecat or Prairie Dog Hunter - is a species of Mustelid native to the prairies of central North America. This ferret is notable as is it highly endangered and has come close to extinction, even once being declared extinct in 1979, and were not found again in the wild until 1987. But thanks to intense conservation and captive breeding programs this mammal had rebounded to about 1,000 mature animals born in the wild. The Blacktailed Prairie dog is a member of the family Sciuridae. These small mammals are native to the Great Plains of North America stretching from southern Canada down into northern Mexico. An adult usually weighs about 1.5 to 3 pounds (0.68 to 1.4 kg) with a body length of roughly 14 to 17 inches (36 to 43 centimeters), with a 3 to 4 inch tail (7.6 to 10 centimeters.) Males tend to be larger and heavier than the females. They are very social animals, living in multi-family burrows with a hierarchy and relatively complex social order. Some of these colonies are massive, with one as large as 4,000,000 individuals covering 25,000 square miles described in Texas. At one time, the species was considered endangered due to environmental pressures and disease, but thanks to conservation effort these rodents have rebounded and are no longer considered at risk.
