American Pika – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the American Pika:
The American Pika is native to the mountains of the western United States and Canada, usually living in large boulder fields at or above the tree line. They are about 6-8 inches long (162 to 216 millimeters) and generally weigh about 6 ounces (170 grams.) Despite looking similar to a mouse, it is more closely related to hares and rabbits. They are herbivores, feeding on a variety of grasses, thistles and sedges. Pikas are active during the day, calling out from the tops of boulders or gathering food. They are the prey for a variety of different animals, so they are extremely cautious, turning tail into their burrows in the rock crevices at the first sign of danger. Due to climate change, pikas are good environmental indicators of the warming planet. Unfortunately, as the earth gets hotter the environments the pika needs to survive is disappearing. The Pine Marten is a smaller member of the family Mustelidae. This mammal has a very wide distribution over much of North America, mostly in Canada abut it is also found in some areas of the Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountains and Northeastern US. This weasel grows to weigh about 4-15 pounds and 29-47 inches in length. They are opportunistic feeders. They will usually feed on small, ground dwelling mammals such as voles and mice. They will, occasionally, attack and kill animals as large or even larger then themselves, like rabbits. The Pine Marten also eats fruits, berries and insects. In some areas, they have been extirpated from their native range, but reintroduction projects have helped them re-establish themselves. The American Pronghorn (also called the American Antelope or Pronghorn Antelope although it is actually not an antelope) is a herbivorous mammal native to the open grasslands, plains and deserts of the western part of North America. Pronghorns are known for their large migration patterns, which are the longest land migration (over 150 miles each way) in the continental United States. They are also the fastest land animal in all of North America with top speeds reaching nearly 60 miles an hour. While they cannot run as fast as the cheetah, they can maintain their speeds for a greater duration. Pronghorns have excellent eyesight and can spot predators from quite a distance. Unfortunately, the traditional migratory routes of the pronghorn have been disrupted by the greatly increased expansion of natural gas drilling. The Amur Leopard - also sometimes called the Manchurian or Far Eastern Leopard - is a large carnivore native to the mountainous forested regions of Korea, Northeast China and Russia. It is thought to be the most endangered large cat in the world, with perhaps as few as 30-35 species in the wild. Generally males grow to be about 100-125 pounds with the females being slightly smaller. While this species is facing the risk of extinction in the wild, there are organizations such as the Amur Leopard and Tiger Alliance who are working with several agencies to preserve this beautiful felid. The Ancient Bison is an extinct mammal that was native to the North American continent. It was one of the most widespread of the herbivores and is the most common member of the order mammalia found at the noted La Brea Tar Pits in southern California. During the late Pleistocene era (240,000 and 220,000 years ago) the species Bison priscus migrated from Siberia and to Alaska, and eventually was replaced in mid North America by Bison latifrons. Antique bison branched out and existed until around ten thousand years ago. The modern Bison came from this species. Larger than the modern bison by 15-20 percent, the antique bison had horns that could reach a length of up to three feet.
