The American Beaver is a semi-aquatic mammal found in many areas of the US, Canada and northern Mexico. The beaver is the largest rodent in North America and the second largest in the world (the largest being the Capybara of South America.) Adult beavers usually weigh 33-77 pounds and measure around 3.3 feet in total body length. Beavers of are often active at night. They are good swimmers and spend much of their time in the water. Beavers construct "lodges" made out of logs, sticks and twigs where they live. The American Bison - more commonly referred to as the Buffalo (which is actually not closely related to) - is a large North American land mammal. The American Bison once roamed the grasslands of central North America in massive herds, numbering in the tens of thousands. Overhunting and development of their native lands in the 19th century pushed the bison to near extinction with the population dwindling to few a few hundred individuals. Towards the end of the 1800s there was a push for their preservation and aggressive breeding and reintroduction projects were started. Even after over a century there are thought to only be roughly 20,000 bison in the wild today. They are a protected species on federal lands, but in some areas they are raised for their meat. They inhabit soggy meadows, bogs and swamps where they stalk prey - usually small amphibians, fish and invertebrates - among the cattails and bullrushes. It's camouflage is superb, and if it believes it's been spotted, it becomes completely still and blend with it's surroundings, or it may choose to extend it's next upwards and sway with the breeze to hide itself. The American Black Bear is the smallest and most common bear in North America. The live in sparsely inhabited forested areas. They are omnivorous generalist feeders, eating most plant matter such as berries, nuts, young shoots of trees and bushes. They also feed on insect larvae, bees and ants, carrion, fish and the young offspring of elk and deer. They rarely attack humans, although several have been documented. They are the state animal of New Mexico and West Virginia and the state mammal of Louisiana. The American Bullfrog is a medium-sized amphibian and member of the family Ranidae or "True Frogs." They're found in much of the US near any permanent bodies of water such as ponds, lakes, swamps and bogs. They are very sturdy and adaptable frogs, and have been introduced - sometime by accident and sometime on purpose - into ecosystems that cannot handle their voracious appetite. The will basically eat anything moving that can fit into their large mouths. In some areas of the US they are raised for food use. The Bullfrog is the state amphibian of Iowa, Missouri and Oklahoma. The American Burying Beetle - also called the Giant carrion beetle, is a critically endangered species of beetle native to North America. It belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Silphidae. It is carnivorous, feeding on carrion and also requires carrion to breed. It is one of the few species of beetle to exhibit parental care. The beetle used to be very widespread over much of the central eastern US and parts of southern Canada. But now it inhabits about 10% of it's original range. This decline has been attributed to habitat loss, alteration, and degradation of it's habitat, along with uses of pesticides and other chemicals for agriculture. Now, natural populations are known to occur in only five states: on Block Island in Rhode Island, Oklahoma, Arkansas, South Dakota and Nebraska. They have also been reintroduced to Ohio. The species is now considered critically endangered by several environmental groups. Biologists have not been able to explain why the beetle has disappeared from so many areas. The dramatic disappearance of this insect from many areas, however, took place before widespread use of DDT. The American Coot is a member of the family Rallidae - which are small to medium sized birds, usually associated with lakes, marshes and other wetlands. This family includes the crakes, coots, and gallinules. They are a very widespread family of birds inhabiting nearly every climate on the earth. American Coots usually measure about 13–17 inches (34–43 cm)in length and have a wingspan of roughly 23-29 inches (58–71 cm) They are found throughout much of North America, down through Central and into South America. They are largely migratory, although that behavior has been in decline and more birds winter year round in some locations. While not the strongest fliers, they do have great endurance and are sometimes found thousands of miles from their native regions, sometimes reaching Europe and even Tasmania. They have large, comical looking feet like other species of their family which are highly adapted to their environments in the marshes, where they can use them to walk across vegetation on the surface.
