The Ornate Box Turtle, sometimes called the Western Box Turtle, is one of only two terrestrial turtles that inhabit the Great Plains of the US. They range from Indiana in the west to southern South Dakota and southeast Wyoming and south to Texas and Louisiana. These turtles prefer areas with sandy soils, dry prairies and oak savannahs. This turtle requires deep sandy soil to burrow into in order to hibernate for the winter. During the warm summer months the box turtle will stay near wooded edges in order to avoid overheating. It is the state reptile of Kansas.
