The Red Hills Salamander is a larger terrestrial salamander native to a very small range of southern Alabama, in an area of only about 50-60,000 acres in a 60-mile narrow belt between the Conecuh and Alabama rivers. They usually grow to about 10 inches long (25 centimeters.) This amphibian wasn't officially discovered until 1960. Much of the area that the salamander lives in is owned by paper companies, which are systematically clear-cutting the forest and slowly extirpating this salamander from the few areas they exist. For this reason the amphibian is considered threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN.)
