The Sierra Nevada Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog (formerly called the Rana muscosa - Mountain Yellow-legged Frog) is a species of "true" frog, divided into two separate species - the Southern and Northern. At one time these little amphibians were the most common frog found in the Sierra Nevada mountains. But due to a host of environmental pressures these frogs are now found in only about 7% of their original range. Generally only about 1 to 3.5 inches long (4-9 centimeters) they feed primarily on small invertebrates, both aquatic and terrestrial as well as tadpoles. While the frog is now considered endangered and protected in some areas, there is little being done as far as reestablishing them to their original range. It has the odd defense mechanism of smelling like garlic when handled by humans. The Smoky Jungle Frog is a terrestrial amphibian native to the tropical and subtropical jungles of much of Central and South America. They will also head into dry and lower montane forests. They grow to be quite large - over 7 inches long (18 cm) with the males being slightly larger than the females. They are mostly nocturnal and rarely encountered in the daytime, where they spend most of the time buried in burrows, or hiding in leaf litter or empty logs. They are opportunistic hunters, and will eat most anything they come across that is moving and will fit in their mouths; lizards, invertebrates, small birds, mammals and even other frogs. When they are threatened they will emit a loud squeal and secrete a noxious skin fluid. The Southern Crawfish Frog (Rana areolata or Lithobates areolatus is a medium-sized species of frog native to the prairies and grasslands of Indiana west to Kansas, south to Texas, and east to Mississippi. It gets its name because it inhabits the burrows of crayfish for most of the year. The crawfish frog grows from 2.2 to 3.0 in (5.6 to 7.6 cm) in length. Crawfish frogs are found primarily in association with prairie or grassland habitat, though they will also make use of pastures and overgrown fields. They spend most of the year in association with a terrestrial crayfish burrow. Interestingly, this species spends a substantial amount of time active and above ground even on hot summer days, but they never stray far from their burrow which serves as an important retreat from predators, a vital source of water, an escape from grassland fires, and a means to get below the frost line during winter. Crawfish frogs feed opportunistically on insects and other small invertebrates that pass by their burrow. Southern Leopard Frog – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Southern Leopard Frog:
The Southern Leopard Frog is a mostly aquatic amphibian found in the south-eastern third of the United States. It is a member of the family Ranidae or "true frogs." They are medium-sized frogs, growing to about 5 1/2 inches (90 mm) at the maximum in length. This species prefers shallow, freshwater habitats, such as streams, ponds or lakes, with plenty of vegetation for camouflage. The mating call is a series of abrupt, deep croaks, creating a guttural trill. The trill rate may be as many as 13 per second. Males call from shore or while floating in shallow water. Leopard Frog generally feed on insects and earthworms, but will usually try to eat nearly anything that moves that will fit in it's mouth. Leopard frogs are excellent jumpers and can often avoid predation by leaping into the water and submerging until the danger has passed. They are generally smaller than their relatives the Northern Leopard Frog and have fewer spots.
