These rodents prefer old-growth forests or mature second-growth forests, and some authors regard them as dependent on its presence. The Platypus - or 'Duck-Billed' Platypus, is a small, semi-aquatic mammal native to the small streams and rivers of the eastern coasts of Australia. It can be found from the highlands of Tasmania and the Australian Alps, to the lush tropical rainforests of coastal Queensland, and north to the base of the Cape York Peninsula. It is a type of echinda, and one of only five living monotremes (which are mammals that lay eggs.) When the first specimen of this animal was brought to Europe from Australia, it was greeted with a mix of amazement and skepticism - with some observers going to far as to declare it a hoax. But of course eventually it was proved to be a real animal. On top of being one of the few mammals that lay eggs, it also has the distinction of also being venomous. The male of the species has a sharp spur on the hind foot that can deliver a venom capable of causing severe pain to humans, although it is generally not fatal. The Dugong is a large marine mammal native to the warm water oceans near the coastlines of the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia. They are one of only four extant species of the order of Sirenia and the only living member of the genus Dugong. They are not closely related to other marine mammals, and are instead more closely related to elephants. They are herbivores, feeding on sea grasses and other plant matter in shallow waters. They closely resemble their relative the manatee, however the tail of the manatee is like a paddle, whereas the tail of the dugong is forked like that of a dolphin. These gentle mammals were hunted to near extinction for centuries, but all trade and hunt has been banned in nearly all parts of the world. They are very long lived animals, perhaps living some 70 years. The Dusky Dolphin is a marine mammal found in coastal waters in the Southern Hemisphere. The dolphin's range is patchy, with major populations around South America, southwestern Africa, New Zealand, and various oceanic islands, with some sightings around southern Australia and Tasmania. Its range also includes the Falkland Islands. They are particularly common from Peninsula Valdes to Mar de Plata.
