Red-Headed Woodpecker – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Red-Headed Woodpecker:
The Red-Headed Woodpecker is a small to medium sized woodpecker native to the temperate forests of North America. It is about 7-9 inches long with a wingspan of 14-17 inches. True to the name, this bird has a striking red-colored head. The body is mostly white and the wings are an iridescent colored dark blue or black. They are native to the eastern half of North America, from southern Canada to the border areas of Texas and Mexico. The Red-Headed Woodpecker is omnivorous, feeding on various insects and invertebrates, plant matter such as berries, nuts, seeds, and even small mammals like mice or eggs of other birds. This woodpecker was once very abundant, but the introduction of the European Starling, along with habitat loss now threatens this bird and efforts by some conservation groups are the only thing keeping it from becoming endangered or extinct. Sandhill Crane – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Sandhill Crane:
The Sandhill Crane is a large bird native to North America and small areas of Siberia. Their common name comes from the habitat found in areas like the Platte River, which is an important stopover during their migration. They are very large birds with a wingspan of 6-8 feet. They are able to soar and use thermals in the way that birds of prey such as hawks do. This maximizes their flight distance and minimizes the effort and energy spent. These birds prefer open marshes, bogs and wetlands to feed and breed. They eat mostly grains and seeds, but will also feed on insect, small invertebrates and vertebrates. Like other large birds, the Sandhill Crane will fly south for the winter. During this time flocks of them can number in the tens of thousands. At the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, which is about 100 miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico is one of the best places to view the large flocks. There is an annual Sandhill Crane Festival in November. Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Great-Crested Flycatcher:
The Great-Crested Flycatcher is a large bird of the family Tyrannidae, reaching about 7–8 inches in length (17–21 cm) with a wingspan of around 13 inches (34 cm.) They usually weigh about 0.95–1.41 ounces (27–40 g.) As their name makes clear, this bird feed primarily on flying insects, which is it extremely adept at catching mid-flight. It will also feed on fruit and berries. They are the most widespread member of the genus Myiarchus. They live in forested areas, usually sticking to the treetops and are rarely seen on the ground. Their range is much of the Mid-West and eastern parts of North America. When nesting, this bird will often try and add a snakeskin to the nest. When this cannot be found, it will sometimes substitute a plastic wrapper. Semipalmated Plover – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Semipalmated Plover:
The Semipalmated Plover is a smaller native wading bird found in and around tidal flats and fields. It spends winters on mudflats, salt marshes, and lakeshores along the West Coast from Washington south to coastal Mexico, along the southern Atlantic Coast, the Gulf Coast, and the West Indies. They're smaller birds, weighing on about 0.78–2.22 oz (22–63 g) measuring 5.5–7.9 inches long (14–20 cm) with a wingspan of 14–22 inches (35–56 cm.) They are migratory and winter in coastal areas of the southern United States, the Caribbean and much of South America.Their true status may be obscured by the difficulty in identifying them from the very similar ringed plover of Eurasia, of which it was formerly considered a subspecies. Semipalmated plovers forage for food on beaches, tidal flats and fields, usually by sight. They eat insects, crustaceans and worms. This bird resembles the killdeer but is much smaller and has only one band. The term "semipalmated" refers to its partly webbed feet. Since the semipalmated plover nests on the ground, it uses a "broken-wing" display to lure intruders away from the nest, in a display similar to the related killdeer.
