Information about the Blue Crane:
The Blue Crane - also called the Stanley Crane or Paradise Crane - is a large ground-dwelling bird native to South Africa. It is about 3 feet 10 inches (100–120 cm) tall, with a wingspan of 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 7 inches (180–200 cm) and weighs 7.9–14 lb (3.6–6.2 kg) These birds are generally found in grassy uplands, open fields and plains. It has an extremely restricted distribution, the most of all of the 15 extant crane species. They feed on small crustaceans and other invertebrates such as crabs, grasshoppers as well as frogs, lizards and snakes. While the bird is still common in it's range it has suffered a steep decline since 1980. mostly due to habitat loss due to human incursion. Conservation efforts have begun in South Africa, where is it honored as the national bird of that nation.
