The Knobbed Whelk is a very large species of sea snail native to the coastal areas of North America from Cape Cod down to northern Florida. It is especially common on the coasts of Georgia. This mollusk lives subtidally, moving from shallow to deep water, depending on the time of year. It is a predatory sea snail, and hunts other gastropods for food. The shell is especially lovely and ranges from white and pale pink to darker shades of reds, yellows and purple. It is the official shell of both the states of New Jersey and Georgia.
