The Loggerhead Sea Turtle is the only member of the genus Caretta, which is a latinization of the French word "caret" which means turtle. They are large ocean going reptiles, growing up to 800 pounds and 3.5 feet long. The Loggerhead Sea Turtle feeds on mollusks, crustaceans, fish, jellyfish and other marine animals. Due to environmental factors and past predation of the turtles by humans for meat and their beautiful shells these turtles are considered endangered and are protected by international law.
