This member of the Libellulidae family can be found in lakes, ponds, marshes sloughs, slow moving streams and wetlands. While the larvae of this insect feed on mosquito and other insect larvae, along with freshwater shrimp and tadpoles, adults will feed on nearly any soft-bodied flying insect including mosquitoes, flies, small moths, mayflies, and flying ants or termites.
