The butterfly has been declared as endangered by the US Federal Government. It is a subspecies of Boisduval's Blue (Aricia icarioides).The endangered Mission Blue has a wingspan of about 21–33 millimeters (0.83–1.3 in). The Mission Blue depends on a very specific host plant called the lupine. As such, its habitat is restricted solely to the U.S. state of California. More specifically, it is limited to a range of five known areas where Mission Blue colonies have been confirmed. Mountain Gorillas are one of two subspecies of Eastern Gorilla. These large and powerful primates are only be found in four national parks of the Virunga Mountains in Central Africa. While these animals are very strong, they are also generally gentle and shy. They live in groups of 2-40 individuals, averaging about 11. Wild male gorillas can weigh up to 300 to 400 pounds (135 to 180 kg) while females are usually about half that size. Adult males are roughly 5.5 feet tall (1.68 meters) with an arm span or from 7.5 to 8.5 feet (2.3 to 2.6 meters). Female gorillas are somewhat shorter with smaller arm spans. Groups are led by a dominant male called a 'Silverback'. The Mountain Gorilla is a herbivore that eats over 100 different species of plants. They are critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching and decades of civil war in the areas they live. As of Spring in 2010 their entire population in the wild was estimated to be less than 800 individuals. Gorillas can be identified by their nose prints, which are unique to each animal. The Narwhal - or Narwhale - is a marine mammal native to the freezing waters of the Arctic. Is it a toothed whale and one of two species of the Monodontidae family (the other being the Beluga Whale . They are most noted for their characteristic "horn" which is really an overgrown tusk that grown out of a hole in the animal's upper lip. Biologists have pondered for years why the Narwhal has this tusk, as it seems to serve no purpose. The Narwhale spends much of it's time under pack ice, diving to depths of about 4500 feet or 1500 meters. They are an important food source for the native peoples of the Canadian Arctic and Greenland. While the extreme remoteness of their habitat keeps their populations mostly stable, climate change is having an effect on these whale as the ocean's waters warm up and the dense pack ice retreats further north each year. The Amur Leopard - also sometimes called the Manchurian or Far Eastern Leopard - is a large carnivore native to the mountainous forested regions of Korea, Northeast China and Russia. It is thought to be the most endangered large cat in the world, with perhaps as few as 30-35 species in the wild. Generally males grow to be about 100-125 pounds with the females being slightly smaller. While this species is facing the risk of extinction in the wild, there are organizations such as the Amur Leopard and Tiger Alliance who are working with several agencies to preserve this beautiful felid.
