Black-Necked Stilt – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Black-Necked Stilt:
The Black-necked Stilt is a locally abundant shorebird of American wetlands and coastlines. It is found from the coastal areas of California through much of the interior western United States and along the Gulf of Mexico as far east as Florida, then south through Central America and the Caribbean to northwest Brazil southwest Peru, east Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands. The northernmost populations, particularly those from inland, are migratory, wintering from the extreme south of the United States to southern Mexico, rarely as far south as Costa Rica; on the Baja California peninsula it is only found regularly in winter. The Black-necked Stilt forages by probing and gleaning primarily in mudflats and lakeshores, but also in very shallow waters near shores; it seeks out a range of aquatic invertebrates – mainly crustaceans and other arthropods, and mollusks – and small fish, tadpoles and very rarely plant seeds. Its mainstay food varies according to availability; inland birds usually feed mainly on aquatic insects and their larvae, while coastal populations mostly eat other aquatic invertebrates. For feeding areas they prefer coastal estuaries, salt ponds, lakeshores, alkali flats and even flooded fields. For roosting and resting needs, this bird selects alkali flats (even flooded ones), lake shores, and islands surrounded by shallow water. Black-Necked Swan – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Black-Necked Swan:
The Black-Necked Swan is the is a large waterbird native to South America. Adults of this species range from 40 to 49 inches (102 to 124 cm) in length and weigh 3.5-6.7 kg (7.7-14.8 lbs). The wingspan is generally about 53 to 70 inches (135 to 177 cm). While it is the largest waterfowl found in South America, it is the smallest of it's genera. The Black-Necked swan is generally found in freshwater lakes, marshes and ponds, often not far from shore. It's body is heavy, like many swans, so it prefers to spend much of it's time in the water, using the buoyancy of the water to support it's weight. Like it's closest relatives, the Mute Swan and the Black Swan this bird is almost completely silent. Black-Tailed Prairie Dog – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Black-Tailed Prairie Dog:
The Blacktailed Prairie dog is a member of the family Sciuridae. These small mammals are native to the Great Plains of North America stretching from southern Canada down into northern Mexico. An adult usually weighs about 1.5 to 3 pounds (0.68 to 1.4 kg) with a body length of roughly 14 to 17 inches (36 to 43 centimeters), with a 3 to 4 inch tail (7.6 to 10 centimeters.) Males tend to be larger and heavier than the females. They are very social animals, living in multi-family burrows with a hierarchy and relatively complex social order. Some of these colonies are massive, with one as large as 4,000,000 individuals covering 25,000 square miles described in Texas. At one time, the species was considered endangered due to environmental pressures and disease, but thanks to conservation effort these rodents have rebounded and are no longer considered at risk.
