The Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly is a member of the family Papilionidae, which include over 550 species of swallowtail butterflies - most of which are native to the tropics. Eurytides marcellus is native to areas of the eastern US and southeastern Canada, rarely straying from the plant the Pawpaw on which it is strongly dependent on for food and a host for the cocoon, pupae and nectar for the adult (although the adult will feed on other plants, as well as rotting fruit and even urine. The caterpillar only feeds on the pawpaw plant however. These plants are generally found in woodlands, prairies and savannahs.
