The Common Eland - also called the Southern Eland or Eland Antelope - is a large two-toed ungulate native to the savannahs of east and southern Africa. It is the second largest antelope, with only the Giant Eland being larger. It stands about five feet tall at the shoulder (1.6 meters) with the males weighing roughly 1,200 pounds and the females being slightly smaller. The Common Eland is a herbivore feeding mainly on grasses and leaves. They travel in large groups numbering in the hundreds roaming the savannahs feeding on the grasses. They are predated on by most of the large African predators - lions, wild dogs, hyena and cheetahs. They do well in captivity and are common occupants of zoos around the world. The Common Squirrel Monkey is native to the rainforests, savannahs, mangroves, and marshlands of the Amazon Basin in the countries of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Paraguay and Venezuela. There are also small populations have been introduced into south Florida and and some islands in the Caribbean. This small primate lives in the middle canopy, but will occasionally come to the ground or go up into the top canopy. They feed on both plant materials, such as various rainforest fruits and will also eat any insects they catch. They are generally very social animals, living in groups which affords them more protection from predators. The Warthog or Common Warthog is a wild pig that lives in the savanna habitats of central and southern Africa. Warthogs range in size from three to 5 feet long (0.91 to 1.5 metres) and weighing about 110 to 170 pounds (50 to 75 kg). Phacochoerus africanus has four recoginzed subspecies, and is identifiable by the two pairs of pointed tusks protruding from the mouth, which are used as weapons against predators. Warthogs are omnivorous, and feed on a variety of grasses, roots, berries and other fruits, bark, fungi, eggs and even carrion. The large tusks made from ivory sometimes result in the poaching of these animals, although at this time they are not considered threatened and their numbers are stable. The Coyote (also occasionally called the Prairie Wolf) is a canine found throughout much of North and Central America. It is a cousin of the larger Gray or Timber Wolf, but unlike the wolf the coyote evolved in North America alongside the long extinct Dire Wolf. The scientific name Canis latrans means 'barking dog.' Coyotes are very adaptive and are often seen in urban environments, even ones with a dense human population. In cities they will scavenge garbage, but will also hunt and kill many small nuisance rodents such as rats or rabbits. While the coyote itself is sometimes seen as a pest, some populated areas welcome them to control the population of these animals. Crowned Sifaka Lemur – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Sifaka Lemur:
The Sifaka Lemur are a genus (Propithecus) of lemur from the family Indriidae within the order Primates. Like all lemurs, they are found only on the island of Madagascar. All species of sifakas are threatened, ranging from vulnerable to critically endangered. Sifakas are medium sized indrids with a head and body length of 16 to 22 inches (40 to 55 cm ) and weighing of 6.6 to 13 lb (3 to 6 kilograms). Their tail is just as long as their body, which differentiates them from the Indri. Their fur is long and silky, with coloration varying by species from yellowish-white to black brown. The round, hairless face is always black. Sifakas move by vertical clinging and leaping, meaning they maintain an upright position leaping from tree trunk to tree trunk and moving along branches. They are skillful climbers and powerful jumpers, able to make leaps of up to 10 m (32.8 ft) from one tree to the next. On the ground they move like all indrids with bipedal sideways hopping movements of the hind legs, holding their forelimbs up for balance. Sifakas are diurnal and arboreal. They are herbivores, eating leaves, flowers and fruits. When not searching for food they spend a good part of the day sun bathing, stretched on the branches. Sifakas live in larger groups than the other indrids (up to 13 animals). Even though they defend their territory from invasion by others of their species, they may peacefully co-exist with other lemur species such as Red-bellied Lemur and the Common Brown Lemur.
