The Little Blue Heron is a wading shore bird in the family Ardeidae. It's range is from the Gulf States in the US, south through Central America and into Peru and Uruguay in South America. It can also be found in islands in the Caribbean. The bird is about 24 inches long (60 cm) with a 40 inch wingspan (102 cm). The Little Blue Heron prefers sub-tropical marshes and swamps. Like other herons, it breed in colonies in large trees or thick bushes. It is a very adept hunter, feeding on fish, amphibians, crustaceans and large insects. It is often found in the presence of Snowy Egrets, and examination shows that the bird benefit from this, catching more fish and being better protected from predators. In their juvenile stage, they remain white for their first year. It could be because of the added benefits of staying close to the Snowy Egrets. At one time the bird's numbers were drastically reduced, but over the last few decades they have rebounded, and the population is now stable. It is a member of the Myotis family which are 'mouse-eared bats', which are diverse and widespread genus with dozens of species. Their ears are normally larger than normal bats. Myotis evotis inhabits a wide range of difference environments, including this often associated with forests. It is found under exfoliating bark, in tree cavities, and in stumps resulting from logging. In areas with few trees, they tend to reside in the crevices of cliffs and even rocks on the ground, in lava-tube caves, and mines which have been abandoned. Long-Eared bats are also found buildings and huddling in large numbers under bridges. The Louisiana Crawfish - also called a crayfish, swamp crayfish or even the amusing moniker "mudbug." This small crustacean is native range to freshwater swamps, marshes and flooded forests of the Gulf Coast from northern Mexico to the Florida panhandle, as well as inland, to southern Illinois and Ohio. It has also been deliberately introduced into other parts of the world including Europe, Asia and Africa. In some places they have expanded beyond the intended boundaries and are now threatening the native crayfish in those places. These invertebrates are extremely important as a food source, and most of Procambarus clarkii harvested in the world comes from Louisiana. For this reason the state designated this crawfish as the state crustacean in 1983.
