Pied-Billed Grebe – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Pied-Billed Grebe:
The Pied-Billed Grebe is a widely distributed member of the family Podicipedidae, which are the grebes and has dozens of species in the world. They have many other names, such as American dabchick, dabchick, Carolina grebe, devil-diver, dive-dapper, dipper, hell-diver, pied-billed dabchick, thick-billed grebe, and water witch. They are smaller birds, only about 12-15 inches long (31-38 cm) with a wingspan of 18-24 inches (45-62 cm.) Like other grebes, they do not spend a lot of time flying but spend most of their time on wetlands with emergent vegetation, such as cattails. They primarily feed on fish, amphibians and aquatic invertebrates like crustaceans. Both parents look after the young, carrying them around on their backs until they are old enough to swim by themselves. Pig Frog – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Pig Frog:
The Pig Frog - also sometimes called the Lagoon Frog or Southern Bullfrog - is an aquatic amphibian found on the edges of lakes, swamps and marshes. It is a member of the family Ranidae or "true frogs." They get their name from their distinctive pointed and pig like nose, along with the distinctive call which sounds like the grunt of a pig. These amphibians are common around the edges of water, in lakes, ponds and ditches, or floating in shallow water. They are mostly active at night. They feed on nearly anything they can swallow such as invertebrates, crustaceans, fish and amphibians. Despite the overall decline of many of the world's amphibians, the Pig Frog's numbers seem fairly stable and they're common in their range. The legs of these frogs are considered delicacies to some, and they are often hunted at night using flashlights and lanterns. Plains Lubber Grasshopper – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Plains Lubber Grasshopper:
The Plains or Western Lubber Grasshopper is a large and colorful grasshopper native to the central and southern regions of North America. Unlike many grasshoppers, it is not a significant threat to crops, as it tends to prefer broad-leaved plants and doesn't congregate in large numbers. Although it is thought to prefer sunflowers. Coloration can vary, with some adults having blueish parts on the head and back legs, and others being green. Females are less colorful than the males. Like other insects, this grasshopper uses its antennae to feel and smell. It has two pairs of eyes (simple and compound) to see. The tympanum, or a round membrane located on either side of its body near its hind legs, allows it to "hear" or detect sound waves. For tasting, it uses the parts of its mouth called palps. To breathe, it has spiracles, or tiny holes located all along the abdomen.
