The Oregon Swallowtail Butterfly is a large flying insect native to sagebrush canyons of the western parts of the United States and Canada. This butterfly has a wingspan of about 2.5 to 4 inches (6.4-10 centimeters.) As a caterpillar it feeds on tarragon sagebrush. As an adult the butterfly feeds on nectar from thistles, balsamroot and phlox. This lovely butterfly was one of four species to be put on a series of US stamps in 1976. in 1979 the species was designated as the official state insect of Oregon.
