Despite it's appearance, the Sand Tiger shark is generally not aggressive, unless it's provoked. Although attacks do occasionally happen, they are rarely fatal. Because of its large size and relative ability to thrive in captivity, it is often seen in public aquariums. The Sand Tiger shark feeds on fish, crustaceans, smaller sharks, rays and squid. The species is considered vulnerable due to overfishing, drift nets made worse by the shark's late maturation and low breeding success. The Sandhill Crane is a large bird native to North America and small areas of Siberia. Their common name comes from the habitat found in areas like the Platte River, which is an important stopover during their migration. They are very large birds with a wingspan of 6-8 feet. They are able to soar and use thermals in the way that birds of prey such as hawks do. This maximizes their flight distance and minimizes the effort and energy spent. These birds prefer open marshes, bogs and wetlands to feed and breed. They eat mostly grains and seeds, but will also feed on insect, small invertebrates and vertebrates. Like other large birds, the Sandhill Crane will fly south for the winter. During this time flocks of them can number in the tens of thousands. At the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, which is about 100 miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico is one of the best places to view the large flocks. There is an annual Sandhill Crane Festival in November. The Sandia Hairstreak Butterfly is a species of butterfly native to North America. It has a fairly limited range and is a somewhat rare butterfly because of that. It is found in the yucca-agave desert in the Southwestern United States. It was discovered in 1959 by a member of the 4-H club. The butterfly is small - only 1 1⁄8 to 1 1⁄4 inches (2.9 – 3.2 centimeters) long. In both forms of adult and caterpillar the Sandia Hairstreak relies heavily on the plant Texas sacahuista (Nolina texana.) It lays it's eggs on the stalk, the caterpillar eats on the plant after hatching and the adult feeds on the nectar. It is the state insect of New Mexico.
