Basilosaurus – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Basilosaurus:
The Basilosaurus is an extinct genus of cetaceans - which are marine mammals such as whales, dolphins and porpoises) - that lived during the late Eocene period (40 to 34 million years ago) When they were first discovered in the southern area of the United States it was believed to be a reptile, and that is why they have the suffix "saurus." But later on it was determined to be a marine mammal. Some of the genus grew to be about 60 feet long (18 meters) and believed to be the largest animal living at that time. It was a top predator and would have feared nothing in the ocean, except for those of it's own kind. Fossil specimens have been found having smaller Basilosauruses in their stomachs. The shape of the head wouldn't allow for a large brain, so it's likely that Basilosaurus didn't have the same heightened intelligence or social structures of modern whales. Uromastyx benti is found in the southern Arabian Peninsula (southern Yemen and southern Oman.) Uromastyx are also called spiny-tailed lizards, and there are about 13 species world-wide. They tend to reside in dry, desert areas usually with rocky areas. They are omnivores, feeding on vegetation, such as grasses but will also feed on insects and other small invertebrates. These lizards are fairly colorful, usually exhibiting yellows, oranges, blues and greens. Black Mambas are highly venomous snakes belonging to the family Elapidae. It is one of four species of the genus Dendroaspis. The other three species are green and arboreal in nature. The Black Mamba is native to the savannas, rocky hills and open woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. The fearsome reputation of Black Mamba is deserved as bites from them, if left untreated, have a mortality rate of 100 percent. (The venom of the other species of mamba are somewhat less deadly.) However, the popular belief that they will attack unprovoked and actually chase humans is not accurate, as these snakes generally will not bite unless provoked.
