Information about the American Burying Beetle:
The American Burying Beetle - also called the Giant carrion beetle, is a critically endangered species of beetle native to North America. It belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Silphidae. It is carnivorous, feeding on carrion and also requires carrion to breed. It is one of the few species of beetle to exhibit parental care. The beetle used to be very widespread over much of the central eastern US and parts of southern Canada. But now it inhabits about 10% of it's original range. This decline has been attributed to habitat loss, alteration, and degradation of it's habitat, along with uses of pesticides and other chemicals for agriculture. Now, natural populations are known to occur in only five states: on Block Island in Rhode Island, Oklahoma, Arkansas, South Dakota and Nebraska. They have also been reintroduced to Ohio. The species is now considered critically endangered by several environmental groups. Biologists have not been able to explain why the beetle has disappeared from so many areas. The dramatic disappearance of this insect from many areas, however, took place before widespread use of DDT. The American Coot is a member of the family Rallidae - which are small to medium sized birds, usually associated with lakes, marshes and other wetlands. This family includes the crakes, coots, and gallinules. They are a very widespread family of birds inhabiting nearly every climate on the earth. American Coots usually measure about 13–17 inches (34–43 cm)in length and have a wingspan of roughly 23-29 inches (58–71 cm) They are found throughout much of North America, down through Central and into South America. They are largely migratory, although that behavior has been in decline and more birds winter year round in some locations. While not the strongest fliers, they do have great endurance and are sometimes found thousands of miles from their native regions, sometimes reaching Europe and even Tasmania. They have large, comical looking feet like other species of their family which are highly adapted to their environments in the marshes, where they can use them to walk across vegetation on the surface. The American Crow is a member of the order of Passeriformes or perching birds. They are about 16–20 inches long (40–50 cm) with the tail making up about 40% their total length. Each wing is around 11–14 inches long (27–34 cm) Crows are highly intelligent birds that can be found in nearly every type of environment on the planet - natural or man-made. They've been witnessed using tools to obtain food or solve other types of problems. On a road where there is slow moving traffic, crows in Japan learned to drop tough-shelled nuts onto it, and waiting for the cars to run over and break open the nuts, returning then to eat them. The Fisher is a member of the family Mustelidae. It is native to large areas of North America stretching from the East Coat to the West, including much of the northern boreal forests of Canada, parts of the upper New England Area and large areas of the Pacific Northwest. The Fisher is sometimes called a "Fisher Cat" but it is not a feline. Both sexes are similar in appearance, but the males are slightly larger - growing to an adult size of 35-47 inches (90-120 cm) and weighing about 8-13 pounds (2-2.5 kilograms.) The American (formerly Rosy) Flamingo is a large bird related closely to other flamingo species like the Greater Flamingo and Chilean Flamingo. It is also sometimes called the Caribbean Flamingo. The bird is about 47–55 inches in length (120–140 cm). Males weigh about 6.2 pounds (2.8 kg) and females (4.9 pounds (2.2 kg) It is found in North, Central and South America and remarkably has breeding ground in the Galapagos Islands and nearby coastal islands of Venezuela and Columbia. The American Flamingo is the only flamingo native to North America. It can be found in saline lagoons, mudflats and shallow brackish water and mangrove swamps. They feed on algae and brine shrimp. The algae has an effect on the coloration of the bird, and some born and raised in captivity lack the distinctive pink coloration.
