The American Oystercatcher is a member of the family Haematopodidae, which is the group of a birds referred to as Oystercatchers, which includes about 10 species. This shorebird is commonly encountered on the beaches and rocky coastlines of the western North American continent from Alaska to the Baja Peninsula. As the common name suggests, this bird forages for oysters and other mollusks such as mussels, limpets and chitons. It will also prey on crabs, barnacles and other small invertebrates. The scientific name was given to the bird by James Audubon for his friend John Bachman. Information about the American Painted Lady Butterfly:
The American Painted Lady - or Amercan Lady - is a true brush-foot butterfly found throughout North America. They are usually found in open places with low vegetation including dunes, meadows, parks, vacant lots, forest edges. The wing spread of adults is 1.75 to 2.40 inches. The upper surface of the wings is orange-brown with black margins. The front wings have white spots on the outer third. The lower side of the front wings has a bright pink area. Part of the forewing margin is concave — one of the characteristics that distinguishes it from the similar and closely related painted lady, Vanessa cardui (Linnaeus). The lower side of the hind wing has a characteristic "cob-web" pattern and two large eye spots near the margin. By contrast, the painted lady has a row of four smaller eye spots. Information about the American Pika:
The American Pika is native to the mountains of the western United States and Canada, usually living in large boulder fields at or above the tree line. They are about 6-8 inches long (162 to 216 millimeters) and generally weigh about 6 ounces (170 grams.) Despite looking similar to a mouse, it is more closely related to hares and rabbits. They are herbivores, feeding on a variety of grasses, thistles and sedges. Pikas are active during the day, calling out from the tops of boulders or gathering food. They are the prey for a variety of different animals, so they are extremely cautious, turning tail into their burrows in the rock crevices at the first sign of danger. Due to climate change, pikas are good environmental indicators of the warming planet. Unfortunately, as the earth gets hotter the environments the pika needs to survive is disappearing. The Pine Marten is a smaller member of the family Mustelidae. This mammal has a very wide distribution over much of North America, mostly in Canada abut it is also found in some areas of the Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountains and Northeastern US. This weasel grows to weigh about 4-15 pounds and 29-47 inches in length. They are opportunistic feeders. They will usually feed on small, ground dwelling mammals such as voles and mice. They will, occasionally, attack and kill animals as large or even larger then themselves, like rabbits. The Pine Marten also eats fruits, berries and insects. In some areas, they have been extirpated from their native range, but reintroduction projects have helped them re-establish themselves.
