The Pelagic Cormorant - also called Baird's cormorant or Pelagic Shag - is a small seabird and member of the cormorant family Phalacrocoracidae. This cormorant is native to the coasts of the northern Pacific Ocean, and during the winter months it spend much of it's time in the open ocean. When breeding, it will look for rocky shores and islands. They do not form large colonies, but smaller groups may nest together. In some cases these birds alternate between two or three nesting sites in a region from one year to another. The nest is built at the cliff face, usually on ledges, less often in crevices or caves. The Pennsylvania Firefly - also called the lightning bug and glowworm (in it's larval stage) is native to open fields, forests and pastures in the eastern part of North America. It is not a fly, but rather a member of the order Coleoptera, which are beetles. They are about 3/4 of an inch long (2 centimeters) They are naturally known for their use of bioluminescence, which it uses in both the larval stage and as an adult for dual purposes - to attract mates and also prey. The Pennsylvania Firefly feeds on a variety of invertebrates - such as other insects, flies and even land snails. Across North America there have been reports of declining numbers of fireflies in areas they were once very common. Overuse of harsh pesticides and herbicides along with the habitat loss required by larval life stages (especially in suburban and rural areas) coupled with the massive drought are all likely factors in the decline of the firefly. The Permit Fish is a member of the family Carangidae. It is a game fish native to the warm waters of the western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts in the north, along the coast of the Americas down to Brazil . The name of this fish comes from a Latin adjective that roughly means "armed with scythes." Adults can reach a maximum of 48 inches (122 cm) weighing up to 80 pounds (36 kg.) They are generally found in shallow waters, usually with muddy bottoms, along channels and in mudflats. They are sometimes seen alone or in small schools. The Persian Leopard - also called Caucasian leopard - is the largest leopard subspecies They are native to remote areas of northern Iran, eastern Turkey, the Caucasus mountains, southern Turkmenistan, and parts of western Afghanistan. This large wild cat endangered throughout its range with fewer than 871–1,290 mature individuals, and the population is declining. Like other large cats, Persian Leopards feed on goat, deer, gazelle and wild boar. They will attack and kill livestock and for this reason they are often exterminated by local farmers. At one time these leopards were most likely distributed once over the whole Caucasus, except for steppe areas. Surveys conducted between 2001 and 2005 confirmed that there are no more leopards in the western part of the Greater Caucasus, and that they survived only at a few sites in the eastern part. The largest populations survive in Iran.
